Long Live Play !

A PlayStation freak myself, im really enjoying their creative ads recently!! Especially the ones showing during Champions League capitalising on us gamers as the players! just Love it!!

We are seeing a major switch from product centric advertising to consumer centric  advertising; brands have started shifting to emotional communication startegies. The play on consumer emotions is a tricky field, brands are now putting themselves in the consumer's shoes and peeping through their eyes. The are talking consumer of their products and not brand to consumer anymore!!

It is now "This is What We Are 4 You " rather than "Buy Us!"

This new one carries an even bigger WOW effect!!! just watch and enjoy!!

Flying Low - British Ariways #FAIL

And yet another embarassed advertiser!

British Airways recently launched a $40m promotion, only to generate an incalculable EPIC #FAIL !!

Turns out the bright minds at their creative agency forgot to remove one crucial element during their CGI work, the evidence of using a RIVAL airplane in the ad promo!!!

The plane used in the promo has been branded with the necessary BA branding, but the airplane tag/code unfortunately slipped through, only to be spotted by a BA engineer's keen eye, almost too late!!

the pic speaks for itself!

"BA's advertising agency, BBH, were then called upon to make an emergency edit to ensure the 90-second ad, which charts the history of the company, was corrected.
The offending shot showed a row of three BA Boeing 747s sitting on the tarmac. The closest displays the serial code G-VGAL, the marking for a Virgin Atlantic plane based in Manchester."

A picture, a 1,000 words, a 1,000 secrets

This is one of my favorite paintings, came across it while in school through a history book, and late on in college through a history of art class.

The colors just marry each other so perfectly, the setting is so mystical, and the attention to details in it is insane on so many levels, i will leave the mystery of the painting to be unraveled as per art historian Carola Hicks

The couple Among the foreign merchants living in prosperous 15th-century Bruges were members of the Arnolfini clan from Lucca in Italy. They combined trade with finance and were the first merchant bankers. Argument has flourished over which Arnolfini this is and we will never know for sure. The best guess is that it is Giovanni di Nicolao Arnolfini, who married Costanza Trenta in 1426.
The pregnancy? Giovanni and Costanza had no recorded children and Costanza had died by 1433, the year before the portrait was painted. Is this a memorial to Costanza, who might have died in childbirth? Artists liked to pose women in a pregnant stance, whether they were or not, as fertility was an essential quality in a wife. There are other symbols of fertility, from the red bed to the rug – a rare commodity in 15th-century Northern Europe, and associated with a birthing chamber. Also, the figure carved on the chair behind the woman is St Margaret, patron saint of childbirth.
The bed This is what guests would have expected to see in a reception room. It may not have been used for sleeping in, but implied that the master of the house was of sufficiently high status to exhibit such a possession as an adornment.

Thee oranges In Bruges, oranges were a rare delicacy imported from the far south. They were prized for their culinary properties, adding zest to sauces that livened up dull Flemish winter fare. The fruit and its blossom were symbols of love and marriage, and doctors recommended that oranges be carried in order to stave off the plague.

The sandals These (lying on the floor) are the one really fashionable element of the woman’s ensemble. Dyed leather was another luxury, with dark tones the hardest to achieve. With the embellishment of the shiny brass studs, these sandals must have been expensive, a status symbol
as prized as Louboutins today.

Their clothes Both wear the products that made Bruges the centre of a trading empire – fur, silk, wool, linen, leather and gold. The wife’s gown has astonishing dimensions – a replica made in 1997 by students from the Wimbledon School of Art required 35 metres of material. It is lined with squirrel fur, perhaps as many as 2,000 skins. The most prestigious fur was sable, reserved for royalty and aristocracy. The husband’s tabard is lined with pine marten – the next best thing – and its plum tones are another statement of wealth, for dark dyes were more expensive to produce.

The mirror The mirror supplies a new subject – two more people entering the room. The Latin inscription above it – Johannes van Eyck fuit hic (Jan van Eyck was here) – confirms the presence of the artist himself in this invented room. The circular, slightly convex surface was the only shape available for mirrors made of glass– which were a rare domestic item. Only the privileged few were able to see their own faces.

The beads and the brush The string of amber beads to the left of the mirror is a paternoster – a form of rosary, produced in Bruges. Van Eyck was perhaps advertising a local industry exported by Arnolfini. Beads symbolised female piety and were a standard gift from a man to his bride. The brush, hanging to the right of the mirror, represents the industry and humility of Christ’s mother – suggesting the Flemish tradition of showing biblical characters in modern settings.

The dog This is a brussels griffon, the descendant of a long line of flanders terriers bred to catch rats. The breed reached England in the 19th century and its features are still carefully prescribed by the Kennel Club today.

Gold Dust

Google made a tremendous Google Doodle the other day to celebrate one of the greatest, if not the greatest i believe, performer in the music industry.

Freddie was a bomb on stage, he was a great person, he was a champion!

May he rest in peace for the greatest music he brought and the influence he left in so many artists.

And finally, my favorite song of all times - Bohemian Rhapsody

Desk Death

How many hours do you spend sitting at work, at home, in the car, in the diner....

well apparently it is killing you slowly!!

yes with the fast pace that life is taking, we are having 24+ hour days, we just don't have the time to exercise, to run, to be good to our back and legs!

i hope this infograph would help us realise the importance of a good stretching in the office, a good walk around the house, an hour in the gym a day...

1,000,000 thank you!

This is a firm example on brands thinking beyond social media on the web, and giving back to their fans/consumers.

1st comes Heineken's recent 1,000,000 hugs campaign, where the brewer celebrated reaching 1,000,000 Facebook fans with dispatching Heineken girls to hug 1,000,000 fan, with a big Thank You hug, one hug at a time!!! This is a great and simple way to send out a personal thank you!! Imagine the faces and reactions of people (especially the chromosome Y),, well check out the video below!

2nd example comes from one of the most prominent car manufacturers, Porsche! To celebrate reaching their 1,000,000th fan on Facebook, they went about this quite differently and unexpectedly, some might say. The guys at Porsche decided the best way to say thank you is to give every one of those fans a ride in of their power house cars, the GTR3 R Hybrid. The video below gives out the timeline of how Porsche wrote the name of all their 1,000,000 fans on the car and showcased it as their big thank you to their social community, on full display at the Porsche Museum!

Compare the above to the rather very corporate boring thank you message from the guys at Swarovski!

Finally, a nice touch from KLM with the below picture of them writing their Fans of the Day on a huge whiteboard and sharing it, cute, simple and a to the point thank you!

Feel Smarter :)

Just a couple of hints to outsmart some victims you know ;)

(via @stephanienour and www.dilbert.com)

One way to feel smart is to pursue a lifetime of learning. But that's a lot of work. An easier method is to make the people around you appear dumber. I'll share with you some tricks for making your friends, coworkers, family members, and spouses (your victims) look and feel like morons.

1.      When your victim makes any statement of fact or opinion, look at him as if he's wearing a turd for a hat. Repeat what he said, but slowly, as if you're prompting him to see how stupid he is on his own.

2.      After your victim utters a statement of any kind, slowly shake your head in the "no" direction and make a dismissive sound such as "pffft." When challenged to explain your reaction, insist there is no problem, but do so unconvincingly.

3.      Pounce on your victim's every mispronunciation, misspelling, and poor choice of words like a hobo on a ham sandwich. Make sure you dwell long enough on your GOTCHA moment that it creates a lasting memory. (If people try the same trick on you, dismiss them as pedantic.)

4.      When confronted with a new but minor task, such as opening an unfamiliar container, most people require a few seconds of thinking and perhaps a failed attempt or two before they work out a solution. If you see someone in this state, grab the object out your victim's hand and try whatever solutions have not yet been tried, thus making you the successful container opener and your victim the failed container opener.

5.      Continuously instruct your victim to do whatever you think he or she is likely to do on his own anyway, e.g. "Don't step in that puddle." If you do it often enough it creates the illusion that the victim can't navigate the simplest obstacles in life without adult supervision.

6.      Ask your victim to remember details that no normal human could be expected to recall, such as the exact wording of a conversation that happened a month ago. This method can also be used to frame your victim as a liar.

7.      Ask your victim to remind you to do a future task. Pick a time for your request when the victim is distracted or can't write a note to himself, such as when he or she is driving or swimming. Later, after you remember on your own to do the task, remind your victim of his forgetfulness.

8.      Give your victim vague and unintelligible instructions such as "Can you go find the thing I put in the (mumble)?" When your victim fails to find the object, go directly to the correct drawer, produce the object you want, hold it high like Excalibur, and give a victory TA-DA!

9.      Steer conversations away from topics you know little about and toward topics your victim knows little about. If the victim tries the same trick on you, excuse yourself to make a phone call.

10.   Ask your victim to do a minor task for you. After he or she agrees, add a layer of complexity that will guarantee failure. The initial request might be something simple such as "pick up something from the store." The extra layer of complexity is that the item doesn't exist in this dimension.

That's a starter list. You might have some tips of your own to add, let us know!!

Free men, Free-meen?!

UPDATE: Zeid Hamdan was just released, you can follow all the news on Twitter #FreeZeid

A very disappointing and sad event was witnessed today in Beirut, LEBANON

One of the most talented Lebanese artists Zeid Hamdan (former SoapKills frontman) was arrested today over his release of a short song 1 year ago!!

the song below, showcases what most youth and the Lebanese society is feeling

Distraught over the current Lebanese political and social situation with the never ending status of corruption and militia control and brainwash.

The song's final words addressing the current president General Suleiman state : General Suleiman, GO Home!!

the song itself is a work of talent with vibrant beats and straight to the point lyrics, and a visually attractive video clip.

It is interesting to know why the authorities have waited one long year to get their act up and decide the unimaginable arrest of the artist.

In a country considered as the forerunner of free speech and free expression advocate, seeing this makes you think twice about the song itself and its valid arguments.

Yet another event that makes me ashamed of holding the Lebanese nationality, but still i am fortunate and proud to see the hope rise in me again of this country to one day rise back from its ashes, restore its "Switzerland of the Middle East" status and prove what a wonderful country it can fly out to be,, this hope which artists like Zeid and his work keep thriving to never let this flame die in us.

AlmazaNa ?!

Im always on the lookout for creative ad copies and ad executions and such, being in the industry and all; and having a penchant for creativity and ideation.

The latest campaign to strike my eye, was that of Almaza Beer (Lebanese Beer)... which brough back some memories of their ads in the recent years.

They have been relying heavily on popular saying in the lebanese dialect and twisting them to fit the brand and product... it is gona be quite tricky to explain and translate the messages, but for lebos, you'll get it immediately and salute the creativity

The latest one, with the line, "Blonde or Brunette" which is spot on, for the different bottles they sell.

With the plethora of political parties in Lebanon, they chose to ride the wagon and be the party of 24!

The copy reads:
1971 (right) : Lebanese Georgina Rizk crowned Miss Universe...we celebrated
1990 (left): it settled (end of the civil war in lebanon ... we back to celebrating
A lebanese dialect specificity where we turn names into actions like We McDonalded? (as in let's go, we grab a mcdees)

After 2 disturbing summers in Lebanon, the copy reads "2008, what ever happens, we gona celebrate)
It was a period of elections, and the copy reads "This summer, everyone's eye is on the chair"

The copy reads "it must open again" in the sense that, good fortune must come around

The brewery of Almaza is situated in Dawra, and witnesses heavy traffic, as it is one of the capital's main entry/exit points.
The copy reads "you think the Dawra traffic is because of me?"

Please share any new Almaza ads when you spot them!

Italian Beauty

Last weekend i had the chance to test drive an Italian Devil, the 2010 Aprilia RSV4-R superbike.

The bike is a monster!

Let's start with the edgy in your face i wana race all day design of the bike! the super narrow rear seat giving it a rocket forward feel, the triple headlight design fitting so well without cluttering the front, the sleek low race like window screen (doesn't provide much wind cover though). The bike's ivory white is it's only color in the UAE market, setting it aside from the Racing rocket big sister RSV4 Factory's gorgeous red and black colour theme!

Design and ergonomics wise, the bike is tiny, barely shorter than the Yamaha R6! this is mainly because of the genius compact V4 engine design, allowing for less space than Japanese inline engines. The seat is quite thin and hard, providing some comfort for short stints, but a numb ass is in waiting for long rides; the seat sits pretty high actually compared to other bikes at 33.3 inches from the ground. Being a tall rider, the footpeg position is quite challenging cuz of the compact design of the bike, but you get used to it. The handlebars are quite well positioned for a racing feel and you tend to dip more to the front compared to other bikes, similar to the Ducati 1198S i tried a while back (Review here).

The bike's compact design and light weight (almost as light as the Yamaha R1) gives it a light feel on the road with a very surprising ease in the side-to-side action. The low center of gravity and perfect balance gives you a boost of confidence in riding the bike hard!

The instrument cluster is very straight forward with a compact round tachometer and the classic Aprilia orange backlight LCD with a full range of rider info, even has a bike stand engaged light! unfortunately it does not have a fuel gauge which is a downer for such a thirsty bike, but has the low fuel light. i really like the orange fork touch and the side key position for better HDD display. im not a fan though of the cylinder shaped brake fuel canister, i prefer the squarish ones!

As far as the ride goes, MAMAMIA!
The bike is a revving rocket!
First off, the low rpm range of the bike is quite satisfactory, very smooth and not as nervous as you would expect, this is mainly due to the great engine design, with the pistons being perfectly calibrated at any rpm range.
The main grunt of the bike however comes at around 7,500rpm, with a huge umph! contrary to the full power you get at blast off from the jap bikes! that at least kept me from controlling wheelies every time i launch the bike at a green light :p
You do notice however a tiny flat line when you reach the 10,000rpm mark, but it quickly kicks back into action! the bike is sensational on the road and mainly due to it having the same engine as the RSV4 Factory model, a 998cc with 180hp between your legs, the ride by wire technology, having the engine electronically control the fuel injection system to provide the right amount of fuel depending on gear selected, exhaust configuration, speed, braking power and etc...
another great feature on the bike is the racing slipper clutch it has, making the shifting between all  gears as nimble as popping and un-popping a pen! it gives you a feel of having an electronically managed rev prediction system!
I find it quite hard though to find the Neutral gear, it proved to require a super feather like touch :(
The nicest feature i must say on the bike is the mode selection is has: Track, Sport and Road.
With the Track mode giving full power to all 6 gears, the Sport mode limits the full power to the first three gears, making it perfect for city riding and finally the Road mode actually reduces the power to 140hp instead of the full stable of 180hp, proving essential for any rainy conditions or "safe" riding :p
The braking power is a marvel as well, with the standard Brembo brakes on both front and rear wheel, though it does not provide you with much accurate feel, making it hard to reach the sought after limit of wheel lock; but gives you more confidence in late breaking into corners knowing you can rely on racing grade brakes!
The ride on the bike was very smooth compared to the Ducati 1198S which had more of a stiffer suspension package, ideal for a race track; the Aprilia's suspension system provide by Showa front suspension and Sachs on the rear, both fully adjustable. the ride proves super comfy and well composed from corner exit, with a heavier hand on the gas on exit ;)

This a superbike straight from the race track, a super competitor to the extreme BMW 1000RR and the Ducati 1198S and Desmosedici even!

Pros:
Great power
Track ready bike
Easy to control
Harmonious exhaust
Edgy look

Cons:
Mirrors are tiny and prove useless with shaking a high speeds
Uncomfortable seat
Gas guzzler
Cramped position

Finally, if you are looking for one of those bikes that come every now and then to shake every bike's cage and make you drool over, the RSV4 R is the bike to have for its lower price that the competition, the perfect composure and handling, on and off the track, and the chance to own a beautiful masterpiece of engineering!

Building Blocks

Hey all!!

SuddenlyTwo is back in action after a hiatus!

This weekend i was reunited with a childhood love of mine, one of the best things to ever be present in a child's toy collection:

I un-boxed some new Lego toys with little young friend... the memory rush just hit me!

remember the excitment when you find those little colorful pieces, the crumbling of the plastic bags holding them while you open them so passionately, the sparkle in your eyes, the huge smile on your face...

You then quickly unfold the building manual to start the Lego creation

And the fun started, i began showing the kid the ropes on how to follow the instructions, the colors, counting the number of holes, memorizing the underside of each block for better spotting during the build..

Halfway trough the build i got excited myself, i started giving him one part of the construction and secretly buidling another part behind his prying eyes, just to satisfy this hunger for Lego!!!

The toy is such a marvel, gets your brain cranking, figuring out what goes where, how similar the toy will look to the drawings and the image on the box, and my best part of it all, if you can figure out the rest of the build when you are halfway through, without looking at the manual!

What i recall doing is building all the toys, displaying them for a while before dismantling them and throwing the blocks in a huge box where all the ex-toys lay... just to start pulling out the box and build from my own imagination!!

I believe this is a toy ever child should be exposed to, whould be encouraged to build more and more to work out that creative side of the brain!!

Here are pics of some interesting Lego "sculptures", and links below as well for more galleries!

If you have any Lego sculptures, tpys or pics of them in your archives, do share!!
